Global Call Centers and the AT&T Strike

This past weekend AT&T workers across the country went on strike after reaching an impasse in contract talks, and tens of thousands of workers in their service, retail and cable divisions marched and picketed to push for job security and fair pay. One of the key issues, though, was the offshoring of call center jobs. Call center workers in the US seen their jobs evaporate as multinationals have outsourced operations to overseas call centers in India, the Philippines, Mexico and the Caribbean. We spoke with call center labor activists in the Dominican Republic about what their working conditions are like and why they’re campaigning in solidarity with their US counterparts.

Maxine Hong Kingston recently celebrated the 40th Anniversary of her seminal work "The Woman Warrior," with the Asian American Writers Workshop. As one of the elders who helped define the genre of Asian American Literature she reflects on her personal narrative as part of a broader diasporic cultural transformation.
