New York-based actor and comedian, Jes Tom, joins APF to discuss Asian Americans in the comedy scene, as well as the perpetually problematic representations of Asia and Asian America pervasive in American pop culture media.
Jes Tom is a new voice in stand up comedy, gleefully providing the genderqueer Asian American radical separatist perspective that everyone never knew they wanted. A San Francisco native, Jes has performed alongside prominent West Coast personalities Marga Gomez, D’Lo, and The Zodiac Killer. Locally Jes’s credits include the Opentoe Peepshow, Queens Council on the Arts, and the Five College Queer Conference.
This month of April 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama has been scheduled to visit Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines to engage in talks about trade deals that would be critical in further solidifying the U.S.’s strategic pivot to Asia and the Pacific. This so-called “pivot” has been on the move for several years now, as the U.S. has been working to increase military presence and continue its role as the hegemon in the region.The pivot to Asia is also seen in conjunction with the U.S.’s increased attention towards economic interests in the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2010, the Obama administration has been pushing to talk with Asia-Pacific nations about establishing a major free trade agreement called the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP.
