LGBTQ Korean Americans – Coming Out Through Storytelling

The first bilingual collection of LGBTQ Korean American stories will be released this spring. Despite recent unprecedented recognition of lesbian and gay rights in the U.S., LGBTQ Korean Americans continue to face challenges in their families, faith communities and the larger Korean American community. The Dari Project (meaning “bridge” in Korean) is a community-based project created to increase awareness and acceptance of LGBTQ Koreans by sharing personal stories and providing bilingual, culturally sensitive resources. Join us for a conversation with Dari members Eli and Mark about growing up queer in a Christian community, coming out across language barriers, and the process of putting these stories in writing and sharing them with our families.

Memory of Forgotten War: 60 Years Later

On the 60th anniversary of the armistice of the Korean War—widely referred to as the “Forgotten War,” even as it threatens to reignite on the Korean peninsula today—a new documentary Memory of Forgotten War breaks a long and deep-rooted silence and follows four Korean Americans who share their memories of living through the war’s devastation. When is the right time to talk about experiencing family separation, forced migration, and division of a country, and how do we talk about such painful aftermaths of war? APF spoke with directors Deann Borshay Liem and Ramsay Liem, and CAAMFest’s Christine Kwon about the new film which premieres this month at CAAMFest as part of the film festival’s special focus on the Korean War.
