Report Back from North Korea

North Korea is often demonized for having nuclear weapons and is alleged to be the most isolated and reclusive in the world. Yet most people, including the so-called experts and analysts who write about North Korea, have no direct experience of actually having been there – interacting with the people and seeing first hand how people live, and hearing how they articulate their struggles and hopes for the future. Last month, Asia Pacific Forum's Hyun Lee traveled to North Korea as part of a Korean American peace delegation. Tune in to hear her talk about her rare journey with fellow travelers Betsy Yoon, Cristina Baik, and Juyeon Rhee, as well as interviews she conducted with North Koreans during her travels.

ICE Mandates Mass Deportation Program

Since last year, APF has been following the debate around Secure Communities, a program that requires local police to check the fingerprints of anyone arrested to determine immigration status. Many advocates have called the program a dragnet for mass deportations. Earlier this year Illinois, New York and Massachusetts chose to opt-out of the program, but on Friday Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the program would be mandatory for local jurisdictions, rescinding 39 state agreements stating they were not necessary in the first place. Mizue Aizeki of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights and Sarahi Uribe of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network join APF to discuss ICE's recent actions and what it means for immigrant rights.
