Pakistan: Musharraf Resigns

In the shadow of Independence Day Celebrations, Pakistani President General Pervez Musharaff resigned yesterday, after being threatened with impeachment proceedings. This follows months of political strife in Pakistan, beginning with the suspension of the Chief Justice in March 2007 and followed by the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto last December amidst increased military presence and attacks on civilian life. To talk about the significance of Musharraf’s resignation nine years after taking power, we will be joined by SAFAR SHAFQAT, who teaches political science at St. Mary’s College in Maryland.

Bikini Atoll Residents’ Decades-Long Struggle for Reparations

Shortly after the end of WWII, the residents of the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean agreed to move from their homes so the U.S. government could test atomic weapons in the area. In 1968, the residents moved back, only to find that the tests had left the water and soil contaminated with radioactive material. In the 1980s, the Bikinians filed a lawsuit against the U.S., seeking fair compensation for the taking of their lands. Although granted a $563 million payout in 2001, the former residents have yet to collect on the settlement. Earlier this month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit heard oral arguments from both sides in the case. We speak with JONATHAN WEISGALL, an attorney who has served as lead counsel for the people of Bikini for 34 years.
